Key Takeaways

All construction materials had to be imported, while the transfer of materials to Maafaru presented challenges due to the isolated location. These were some of the main reasons Maldivian companies could not carry out the airport project. The runway was completed in 6 months and the overall project was fast tracked and completed within just 1.5 years. The first test flight landed at the airport within 8 months of the project award, and over 60 different flights landed at the airport for various purposes even while construction activities were being carried out.
